What to Write in a Sympathy Card (With Examples)

What to Write in a Sympathy Card (With Examples)

Sympathy cards are the ones that sit half-written in the drawer. No occasion to plan around, no script to lean on, and the fear of getting it wrong is enough to stall most people completely. Here's the thing: that fear is doing you no favours. A short, honest message means more than a long one that tries too hard.

Start with what you actually feel, not what you think you should say

Phrases like "they're in a better place" or "everything happens for a reason" can land badly, even when well-intentioned, because they read as brushing past the loss. Simpler is safer: "I'm so sorry", "I'm thinking of you", "This is a huge loss". Say the true thing plainly rather than reaching for something poetic.

If you knew the person who died, say something specific

A short, real memory does more than any general sentiment. "I'll always remember how she laughed at her own jokes before she finished telling them" tells the grieving person that their loved one was seen and mattered to someone else too. You don't need a full story, one sentence is enough.

If you didn't know them well, keep it simple and sincere

You're not expected to eulogise someone you never met. "I don't have the right words, but I wanted you to know I'm thinking of you" is honest and enough. Offering something concrete, like "let me know if you need anything, I mean that", is often more useful than vague sentiment.

Sample messages

For a close friend: "There's nothing I can say that makes this easier, but I'm here, whatever you need, whenever you need it."

For a colleague: "I was so sorry to hear about your father. Please take whatever time you need, we've got things covered here."

For someone you don't know well: "Thinking of you and your family during this difficult time."

What to avoid

Skip anything that minimises the loss ("at least they lived a long life"), anything that turns the moment towards you ("I know exactly how you feel, when my dog died..."), and humour, even gentle humour, unless you know the person very well and are certain it will land right.

Our special occasion cards include hand-drawn sympathy designs with a blank inside, so there's room to write exactly what you mean. Florals are a common choice for this occasion, you'll find those in our floral card collection. Not sure which design fits?
