Cat people will forgive almost anything except a badly drawn cat. Dog owners are relatively easy to please. Cat owners clock a wrong posture from across the room, and there's a reason for that. Cats have a narrower range of postures that read as "correct", and a badly drawn cat is more obviously wrong than a badly drawn dog. Get the details right and the card lands. Get them wrong and it just looks off, even if the recipient can't say exactly why.
Posture is everything
The specific way a cat sits, tucked in tight with paws hidden, or sprawled loose and confident, tells you more about the cat's personality than colour or breed ever will. If you know the cat you're buying for, think about how it actually sits and look for a card that matches that energy rather than a generic "cute cat" pose.
Indifference is a feature, not a bug
A lot of cat illustrations try too hard to make the cat look friendly and end up looking like a different animal entirely. The best cat cards capture that particular quality of feline disinterest, a cat that looks like it's tolerating the scene rather than performing for it. That's usually the version that makes a real cat owner laugh in recognition.
Setting matters less than you'd think
Unlike dog cards, where the scene often does a lot of the work, cat cards can carry the moment with the cat alone. A single, well-observed cat on a plain or lightly patterned background usually beats a busy scene.
